Mars Single Dance under new management!

The Mars Singles Dance has received many positive comments. I highly recommend it. Their next dance is Saturday, September 11. Barb & I will be teaching. The lesson will get you prepared for a mixer we will do later in the evening. So come out and join us. It will be a lot of fun!! This will be a great chance to get a head start on our workshop on October 9.

2010 American Lindy Hop Championships

The Harlem Blues and Jazz Band plays on Saturday night Oct. 23. It is the world’s most authentic swing band. It stars seven veteran jazz and blues musicians and one vocalist. The band has a strong link to Louis Armstrong from its beginnings. George James, the first saxophonist in the band, was with Armstrong in the '30's, Armstrong bassist Johnny Williams joined and remained with the band for 25 years until his death in 1998 . "Fats" Waller's guitarist, Al Casey, joined the band in 1981. Al Vollmer created the Harlem Blues & Jazz Band never suspecting that it would become one of the longest continually performing jazz groups in existence. An impressive number of musicians from the classic age of jazz and swing eras have graced the group throughout the years, thereby giving an enviable authenticity and historical significance to the band's performances and recordings.

We are thrilled to announce that we will be hosting two of our very favorite dance bands for this year's event: Tuba Skinny from New Orleans, and Seattle's Glenn Crytzer and his Syncopators! They will each play shows on separate nights of camp, and come together for an unforgettable combined set for our New Year's party! Of course that's not all the live music awesomeness we'll have, so stay tuned for more announcements as we get closer to camp...

TUBA SKINNY
Tuba Skinny is a band that takes its listeners back in time to the jazz and blues music of the nineteen twenties and thirties. The members have been playing together since April 2009. Tuba Skinny plays traditional Dixieland Jazz and Old Blues songs. They're cousins of Loose Marbles and Baby Soda in NYC. These groups have interchangeable players and it is a joy to witness these youngsters spreading the word about the New Orleans music.

GLENN CRYTZER AND HIS SYNCOPATORS
Glenn Crytzer and his Syncopators is a jazz band dedicated to the popular music of the 1920's, 1930's and early 1940's. Founded in 2007 by band leader Glenn Crytzer, the group has become a favorite among dancers around the country. The group's repertoire includes songs and arrangements by Benny Goodman, Fats Waller, John Kirby, Jelly Roll Morton, and more, as well as new original tunes composed in the vintage style. The Syncopators have been featured at Camp Jitterbug, the Seattle Lindy Exchange, Hot Mess, the Emerald City Blues Festival, the Savoy Swing Jam, the Century Ballroom Masters of Lindy Hop and Tap, Harlem Nights, and the Killer Diller Ball, and is the house band at Seattle's Historic Century Ballroom.

Workshop Day and Dance @ CWRU

Hey everyone! The Case kids are all back on campus and we've already got activities going on!

The CWRU Swing Club invites you to come out September 18th for a workshop and dance!

The workshop will begin around 11am. We are happy to say we are bringing in teachers Laura Boon and John Holmstrom! They will be teaching 4 beginner friendly Charleston lessons. Lessons will be held in Adelbert Gym.

The dance starts at 9pm in Adelbert Gym. The wonderful Gene's Jazz Hot band will be playing until midnight!

At 12:15 we will have a latenight out under the stars (weather permitting - if not, we'll be inside) until around 3am.

Pricing is nice and easy:

General Admission -- $15 for everything
A-la-cart -- $5 for each thing[/ul]

1. We have added live music to our Friday Night dance! Rampage Swing
Orchestra will be playing from 10pm to 1am, so all of you late night

you, and many are on topics our instructors just love to teach.

3. Volunteering. While we won't have any free passes to Ninja Swing

I've received the following email from Phillip:
Hi Mark.

In keeping with the spirit of these letters, this is related to dancing. Sandcastle offers a "two for one" special where if two people sign up for a seasons pass, it will cost them $99.99 ($50 each) each, instead of the regular $69.99. Included in this pass is free admission to the Sandbar all Summer, which would cost at least the same over the Summer. There is also a "bring a buddy" free pass during a weekday, one in July and one in August. Discounts on lockers and few other goodies.

BUT, this offer ends on the 4th of July. So, I would love to get in with someone ASAP. If anyone else wants to do this, get a buddy!

Resurrection band needs Swing Dancers July 5

Hi to all Pittsburgh area swing dance couples:

The Resurrection band of Zelienople (a community band) will be playing “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy from Company B” (Andrews’ Sisters song from WWII era) on July 5th at the Zelienople Park. We have one couple who is willing to do a swing dance to this song. We would really like to have other couples as well. Maybe each male would dress in a military uniform (one army, one navy, one marines, etc.) and we could have a sort of mock competition.

There will be only the one song for swing dancing, but Zelienople offers a very nice 4th of July celebration (although it is actually on July 5th this year) in a small town setting. You could certainly try your hand at dancing a polka, or even a hula-hoop contest! There are lots of other fun activities in the park that day as well as food, swimming, dunk tank, children’s activities, etc. If you would be willing to dance for us on that day please give me a call or return e-mail.

Beantown Camp 2010 - June 24-July 1, Boston, MA

In past messages we've highlighted the classes, instructors, music and dance parties, but there is so much more! Beantown has a great social atmosphere, with most campers living and eating together on campus. The dining hall has been newly transformed with a wide variety of seating nooks, plus the food is excellent! The BBQ on Monday night is at the Misselwood Tent down by the beach, followed by volleyball, frisbee, walks on the shore, maybe some jamming, or just relaxing and enjoying the beautiful setting. Each night Beantown Cafe is open, directly adjacent to the main dance floor. You can take a break, get a snack, play some pool or just hang out. The Endicott Pub is open 2 nights, a big hit last year:-) The open practice each day is the place to go to meet up with classmates and go over some of what you learned in class.

The most exciting addition this year is "The Show" on Sunday night in the new state-of-the-art Rose Performance Hall. Confirmed performers include Norma Miller, Ryan Francois, Jenny Thomas, Michael Jagger, Evita Arce, Ramona Staffeld, Peter Strom, Naomi Uyama, Skye Humphries, Zack Richard, Maryse Lebeau, Mike Roberts, Laura Glaess, Andrew Thigpen, Karen Turman, Patrick Schmidt, Natasha Ouimet and Dave Lasagna as emcee. That is one amazing line-up! You are not going to want to miss this for sure!

The entertainment does not stop there! More instructor performances will be during the Saturday night dance party.

That's not all! You can participate in the Northeast Lindy Hop Championships on Friday and Saturday nights. Competitions include Strictly, 3 levels of J&J and Solo Charleston. Tuesday night will have another round of Beantown's Got Talent, the place to be for a lot of great laughs:-) Bring your props, instruments, ideas or whatever else you need to display your talent for our panel of "judges". All in good fun!

Only about three weeks until opening day! Spaces are still available. If you have not yet signed up and would like to join in, please register ASAP. We currently could use more leaders, especially for tracks 1 and 3 and followers for track 5. If you have friends who might be interested, please let them know.

Beantown runs from June 24 to July 1, back at the beautiful Endicott College campus in Beverly, MA. There are multiple packages and time periods to choose from for attending. You can find all of the details and latest information on the Beantown web site:
